Most Canadians like to eat meat especially steaks, roasts and hamburgers. Meat is the main source of protein in our diet and usually takes the largest share of the food budget. But are we guilty of over promoting the virtues of meat protein. Protein can be of two types; animal or vegetable. Animal protein can be found in red meats, poultry and fish but also in eggs, milk and cheese. These foods are called complete protein foods because each of them contains the 8 essential amino acids required by the body. Foods which are sources of vegetable protein are cereals, dried peas and beans and nuts. Vegetable protein foods are low in 2 or 3 of the eight essential amino acids. A meal can include only animal protein foods such as meat, fish or poultry; but this is the most costly way of including protein in the diet. A satisfactory way of obtaining protein and a much more economical way is to have an animal and vegetable protein combination. Such combinations could include: macaroni and cheese, cereal with milk, bread and cheese or a chicken and rice casserole. Finally, one can obtain all the essential amino acids in the diet by eating a variety of vegetable protein. For example, bread and peanut butter or beans and bread. Choosing a variety of vegetable proteins is usually the cheapest way to get ones share of the eight essential amino acids. <1mn 45s>
