Unit pricing in the supermarkets is really a money saving convenience provided you take the time to read the price markings and figure out the best buy. If you have not heard of unit pricing here's what it means; it offers the consumer a way of comparing prices based-on the same unit. This can mean the unit might be weight such as pounds or volume such as fluid ounces. For instance, at the meat counter the labels carry the price per pound as well as the total price and in some stores this service has been extended to prepackaged foods. With unit pricing the consumer can decide which is the better buy of two items of the same quality. On the other hand you may choose an item of a higher unit price because you prefer its' quality. In the small stores unit pricing could be expensive and difficult. But it's certainly easier for the larger stores to do it, particularly those that have computers for stock records. If your supermarket hasn't introduced unit pricing you might pick up a purse size consumer cost calculator. It's simple to work out unit prices with it. The Consumer's Cost Calculators are 75 cents each and may be ordered from Information Canada, Ottawa or from Information Canada Bookstores in many Canadian cities. Be sure to make use of unit pricing when you see it on the store shelf. Stores will not keep up this service if consumers are not using it. And it is only you, the consumer, that benefits from unit pricing. <1mn 43s>
