In our pre-packaged, highly automated food marketing system, the urban farmers market is being rediscovered. Virtually unchanged for hundreds of years, today's market place provides housewives, students and buyers for exclusive restaurants with fresh vegetables from every part of Canada. For those of you who haven't experienced the joys of outdoor marketing here are a few hints. You'll have to do some walking so wear comfortable shoes. Many of the stalls charge a few pennies for large bags so you'll do well to bring along a string or canvass bag for all your purchases. Host vegetable and fruit stalls have very competitive prices so before making any major buys, compare prices. If you don't want to carry your groceries all over the market ask the stall owner if you can leave your purchases with him until you are ready to leave. He'll be glad to write your name on the bag. But don't forget where you've left it. If you are planning to preserve fruits and vegetables and are looking for some helpful suggestions, the market is the place to find them. The farmers wives love nothing better than giving helpful hints - that is if they're not too busy.
