Tom Thomson (1877-1917) painted Canada as no other painter had done before. He spent little time in his Toronto studio and much time in the austerely beautiful woodlands of northern Ontario. He was an expert canoeist and woodsman, completely at home in the wilderness. For five years he painted with growing power and originality. Then he was drowned mysteriously near his camp on Canoe Lake, in Algonquin Park. He left thirty large canvasses and hundreds of small oil sketches. He also left a small group of devoted fellow-artists who had discovered the north country through him, and who later, as the Group of Seven, started a revolutionary movement in Canadian art. His finest works are among the most familiar pictures ever painted in Canada: Jack Pine, West Wind, Spring Ice, Northern River, and so on. They hang in the National Gallery in Ottawa, in the Montreal and Toronto Art Galleries, and in private collections. He ranks as Canada's best-known painter. The people who speak in this programme are some of the few who knew him personally. They include his borthers Fraser and George, a Government Ranger from Algonquin Park, a cook in a lumber-camp, the daughter of the Toronto doctor who sponsored his work, and some fellow artists who are now among Canada's most famous: A.Y. Jackson, Lawren Harris, Arthur Lismer. They build up the picture of the man through anecdotes and impressions that are still vivid after nearly half a century. <28mn 20s>
