The paintings of Emily Carr hang in private and public collections in Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Sweden and Australia. Her books are modern Canadian classics: Klee Wyck, The House of All Sorts, The Heart of a Peacock, The Book of Small. She was eccentric and a genius. Her pictures are now among the most highly-valued ever produced in Canada. In this programme, her friends recall her early struggles in Victoria, British Columbia and how she broke with precedent by going into the great forests to paint their powerful forms and rhythms. They tell how she won the friendship of the Indians of Vancouver Island, how she painted their ancient villages, and earned from them the name of Klee Wyck, "The Laughing One". Artists and collectors then describe her discovery by the sophisticated art worlds of Montreal and Toronto. The speakers who contribute to this part ofthe programme include two of Canada's leading painters, Arthur Lismer and Lawren Harris, and the distinguished anthropologist Marius Barbeau. <29mn 15s>
