Several stages of development are illustrated by songs: from early timber-operations (a rowdy lumberjack song) to the latest technological conquest of the wilderness (a contemporary ballad); from early explorations of the Arctic to the settling of the Western prairies; from the harships of pioneer days in the West to recent hardships in years of drought and economic depression. The Narrator concludes: "Canada's story has been one of steady growth, occasional setbacks and fresh discoveries. And this has been reflected in her songs."
