Postcard for Liberal candidate Robert Jardine, New Westminster, British Columbia. 1908 federal election.

Inscription: We respectfully solicit your vote for Robt. Jardine the Liberal candidate who stands for "White Fishermen Only!" "30 Feet to the Gulf!" and "A Square Deal all Round!"

Historical contextualization:
At the beginning of the 1900s, Indigenous, Japanese, and European settlers participated in the British Columbia fishing industry. The Japanese, in particular, had come to occupy a significant part of the trade. Early Japanese immigrants had risen through the ranks to become fishing bosses that could hire their own Japanese crews. This was a significant source of employment to Japanese, and one of few areas of economic activity still available to them after provincial and federal governments denied them the right to work in certain parts of the economy and to vote.

Japanese prominence in the fishing industry and increasing immigration were met with racist backlash by European settlers, which culminated in rioting in Vancouver's Japantown in 1907. This postcard shows that racist rhetoric was also used in campaign materials in the 1908 federal election.
