A brief history of mining in British Columbia and an account of the modern industry in socio-economic terms. The film presents the past by way of archival photographs and by pairing shots of an abandoned and overgrown mining community with the voice-over accounts of old miners Lindsay Carter, Tom Gorrie, Robert Alstead, Hugh Peter, and Stan McLellan. Other sequences deal with the professionalization of prospecting and the use of modern geological equipment; the role of finance in the planning of a mining project; the construction of a mine site; the operation of a modern underground mine, from blasting to train-transport, to on-site smelting; the effects of mining on dependent communities; and the industry's role in land reclamation. Ralph Sultan, chief economist of the Royal Bank of Canada argues the need for foreign investment, the economic benefits of a health mining industry, and the inevitability of Canada's resource-based economy. Other footage includes shots of Vancouver and the Vancouver Stock Exchange, and aerial shots of the Rocky Mountains. <24mn>
