Arthur Laing, then Minister of Indian Affairs, gifting Rosalie Kirkness (second from right) with an Ookpik doll likely made of rabbit fur. Traditionally Ookpik are made of sealskin. On Rosalie's right is her chaperone Verna Jane Kirkness (no relation) and on the far left is Geraldine Laing, wife to Arthur Laing. Rosalie Kirkness is a Cree woman from God's Lake First Nation. At the age of 13, she was invited by Dofasco Steel Mills to participate in the opening the Canadian Steel Pavilion at the 1967 Montreal Expo and tour a number of cities including Winnipeg, Montreal, Ottawa, Hamilton and Sault Ste. Marie. Verna Jane Kirkness is a Cree scholar and teacher from Fisher River Cree Nation.
