Arthur Laing, then Minister of Indian Affairs, presenting a gift of a book to Verna Jane Kirkness, a Cree teacher with the Department of Indian Affairs and later scholar from Fisher River Cree Nation. Verna Kirkness was acting as a chaperone (no relation) to Rosalie Kirkness (middle). Rosalie Kirkness is a Cree woman from God's Lake First Nation. In the far left of the image is Geraldine Laing, wife of Arthur Laing. At the age of 13, Rosaline was invited by Dofasco Steel Mills to participate in the opening the Canadian Steel Pavilion at the 1967 Montreal Expo and tour a number of cities including Winnipeg, Montreal, Ottawa, Hamilton and Sault Ste. Marie.
