Video recording of a segment of CBC's The Journal hosted by Barbara Frum. News report pertains to the election of the new leader of the Assembly of First Nations. Images of hereditary chiefs, delegates, candidates and First Nations participants of the convention. Issues presented: self-government, the impact of the Indian Act, the 1969 White Paper, aboriginal rights and self government, the 1983 conference, internal fewds between Native organizations, Halijah Harper's stance against the Meech Lake accord, and the role of the Assembly of First Nations, the Oka crisis, criticism and defense of the AFN.~Second part of the Journal presentation is an interview with past AFN leader and Chief George Erasmus. Barbara Frum and Erasmus discuss the future of the AFN. <32 mn>~Last part of the recording is a subsequent presentation of CBC's The Journal. Barbara Frum presents the last leg of the AFN convention (starting at 35 min 45 s). Images of the last three candidates still running (notably Ovide Mercredi, Phil Fontaine). Feature presents history of elections in Phil Fontain's community on Northen Manitoba, Fontain's past and education at residential school, his entry into politics, his work with INAC, his completion of a degree in political science.
