This special campaign edition of CPAC's call-in show Goldhawk Live, hosted by Dale Goldhawk, explores the impact of election campaign television advertisements on voters. Goldhawk poses this question to Canadians: How do you rate the election commercials? He is joined by guests Professor Paul Attallah, of the School of Mass Communication at Carleton University, and Richard Nimijean, of the School of Canadian Studies at Carleton University. They begin the show by discussing the similarities and differences between campaign commercials and regular commercials; comparing the English-language and French-language commercials released so far by the Conservative Party, the Liberal Party, and the NDP; and playing samples of several of the commercials, then analyzing the techniques used in them, and their strengths and weaknesses. They note that there haven't been very many ads released so far, probably because the parties are wary of bombarding voters over the holiday season. They also note that the French-language commercials tend to be more creative than the English-language ones, and suggest that this may be because the Quebec vote is much more up in the air than the vote in other areas of the country. Throughout the program, people from across the country call in to give their opinions on the commercials, and their comments launch further discussion between Goldhawk and his guests. Also included in the program is footage of NDP Leader Jack Layton in Toronto, making a policy announcement on daycare. He notes that in Canada, fewer than 1 in 5 children have access to high-quality, licensed, non-profit child care centres. The NDP would seek to rectify this problem by introducing a Childcare Act and making a permanent federal commitment to funding these types of child care centres. The NDP will also phase in a significant increase in the federal child tax credit, to $1000 over the next four years. Layton also notes that the daycare system in Quebec is an excellent model for the rest of Canada to build on. He takes questions after the announcement. Goldhawk and his guests discuss this announcement briefly, and think it likely that the proposed childcare policy will make an appearance in future NDP campaign commercials. <124mn>
