CPAC's coverage of the military funeral service for retired Sergeant Ernest “Smokey” Smith (1914-2005) held in Vancouver at St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church. Smith was the last surviving Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross medal until he died on August 3, 2005 at age 91. He received the medal for extraordinary heroism for singlehandedly repelling a German counterattack on the Savio River in Italy in 1944. The coverage begins with the casket being transported into the church. The service is led by Major the Reverend Jim Short, Brigade Chaplain, 39 Canadian Brigade Group. Condolences, thoughts, and reminiscences are offered by Bill Graham, Minister of National Defence, Iona Campagnolo, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, Mary Ann Burdett, Dominion Command President of the Royal Canadian Legion, and Bill Wharton, Smith's good friend and comrade, who speaks on behalf of Smith's family. Lieutenant Colonel Rob Roy Mackenzie, Commanding Officer of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, reads Smith's Victoria Cross citation and expresses the thoughts and feelings of his, and Smith's, regiment. Readings are offered by General Rick Hillier, Chief of Defence Staff, Gerry Vowles, President of British Columbia and Yukon Command for The Royal Canadian Legion, and John Fletcher, Lieutenant-Colonel the Reverend Canon, Land Staff Command Chaplain. The service also includes musical performances. The coverage ends with the presentation of Smith's flag and medal to his family, and the transportation of his casket out of the church. <117mn 30s>
