Oral history interview of John Bruce. Reel 1 : talks of the emmigration of his grandfather to Australia and John's birth and schooling and apprenticeship as a Steam fitter and plumber. His activities as a young Socialist and his courtship and marriage. Records his reasons for leaving Australia and journey to South America and life there. Reports on his reasons for coming to Canada and his first years in Toronto and his early activities in the Local 46 of the Plumbers' Union. His story from birth to 1910. Reel 2 : Begins with 1910 and events leading up to World War I. Difficulties with government at ship yards and wage structure. Attitude of workers to war and the large number of unionists that volunteered for service. War Scare and "police state" environment. The mind of the military establishment and government political pay-off in war contracts. The waste of war and the riches it created for some and John Bruce's pacifist attitude and speeches. Meetings with government officials on union problems. Reel 3 : Deals with the compulsory Concilation and Arbitration Act for war industries. The encat by Ontario of the Workmen's Compensation Act. Begins with comments after 1920 - comments on lawyers, judges and the Moonshot of '69. Remarks on aftermath of the O.B.U. General Strike. National Conference Board. Reel 4 : Begins with activities of the late 1917 period and through to the end of the war in 1918. The Russian revolution and the mass rally in Massey Hall in support the revolutionaries. Post war unemployment and the Winnipeg General strike. Aftermath of the Winnipeg General Strike, and the Industrial Relations Commission of 1919 and rising unemployment. Bruce comments on the trials following the Winnipeg General Strike and the chiselling lawyers stealing from the government. Talks of travelling from coast to coast in those days. Reel 5 : Begins with 1921 federal election - 4 active women - election as delegate to T.U.C. in 1922. Recession - Montreal strike and double cross by Commies - ILO Conference in Geneva - Unemployment in U.K. and Canada - TLCC convention in 1924 on unemployment - Geo Meaney enters the Labour Movement. 1925 union campaign to stop declining membership. 5 day week for building trades - Whilte Plains N.Y. court case jurisdiction of building trades. Back 60 1921 convention of the Plumbers' Union and election of President. Comments on union in politics. Peter Heenan as Minister of Labour in 1928. Comments on apprenticeship before 1930 and after the 2nd. World War. O'Connor and Singer establish Builders Council and Royal Commission on price fixing. Amalgamated Builders Council and Anti-Commies Act.
