Plaskett, Joe, 1918-2014 : Joseph « Joe » Plaskett est né à New Westminster, en Colombie-Britannique, le 12 juillet 1918. Il obtient un diplôme en histoire de l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique en 1939 et débute sa carrière d'enseignant. Par la suite, il étudie les arts à l'École d'art de Vancouver et à l'École de Banff auprès d'enseignants influents : A. Y. Jackson, Jack Shadbolt et B. C. Binning. L'amitié qu'il noue avec Jock Macdonald et Lawren Harris dans les années 1940 l'inspire et l'encourage à persévérer.
En 1946, Plaskett obtient une bourse Emily-Carr pour étudier à San Francisco et à New York auprès du peintre Hans Hofmann. En 1947, il devient directeur de l'École d'art de Winnipeg. Il administre l'établissement et y enseigne pendant deux ans. En 1949, il se rend à Paris (où il étudie entre autres avec Fernand Léger) et à Londes, à l'École des beaux-arts Slade, où il reçoit une bourse du Conseil des arts de Grande-Bretagne.
À son retour au Canada, Plaskett expose à la Galerie d'art de Vancouver, à la Galerie d'art de l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique ainsi qu'à Winnipeg et à Toronto. Il enseigne à l'École d'art de Vancouver en 1952 et en 1953, puis retourne à Paris lorsqu'il obtient une bourse du Conseil des arts du Canada pour étudier la gravure avec Stanley Hayter. Il revient ensuite au Canada pour enseigner à l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique, à l'École d'art de Vancouver et à Emma Lake, en Saskatchewan, de 1955 à 1956. L'année suivante, en 1957, il s'installe à Paris pour de bon.
Dans la capitale française, Plaskett se consacre à la peinture. Il possède également une résidence à Suffolk, en Angleterre, et une autre à New Westminster, en Colombie-Britannique, et voyage souvent un peu partout dans le monde. Cependant, c'est au Canada qu'il expose et vend la majorité de ses oeuvres, tenant des expositions presque tous les ans. En 1967-1968, il reçoit une subvention du Conseil des arts du Canada afin de peindre le paysage canadien de Terre-Neuve à l'île de Vancouver. En 1980-1981, il réalise une série d'oeuvres portant sur la côte Nord-Ouest du Pacifique.
Joe Plaskett est surtout connu pour ses peintures d'intérieur et ses natures mortes, ainsi que ses portraits et autoportraits. Ses tableaux sont conservés au Musée des beaux-arts du Canada et dans des collections privées et publiques au pays.
En 1999, Joe Plaskett publie ses mémoires, A Speaking Likeness, chez Ronsdale Press, avec un avant-propos de feu George Woodcock. En 2004, il met sur pied une fondation qui porte son nom : la Fondation Joe Plaskett. Celle-ci offre des bourses à de jeunes artistes canadiens pour leur permettre de voyager et d'aller étudier en Europe afin de perfectionner leur art.
Joe Plaskett s'éteint le 21 septembre 2014 à l'âge de 96 ans.
