This series consists of ca. 7,050 photographs pertaining to the personal life and professional career of Bill Mason. The series predominately consists of colour transparencies (ca. 4,700), but also includes b&w transparencies and negatives (ca. 860), as well as prints (ca. 1,420) and a small number of glass negatives, celluloid internegatives, prints, and contacts.

Many of the photographs were taken by Bill Mason or a member of his production crew in the process of creating his film, and include location shots and film stills from many of his documentaries. Included are views of wilderness areas, paddling, whitewater, the wolves Mason kept, and photographs of Mason and his family.

Films for which the photographs were taken include Tabernacle, Blake, The Land that Devours Ships, Death of a Legend, Waterwalker, Face of the Earth, In Search of the Bowhead Whale, Paddle to the Sea, Quetico, The Rise and Fall of the Great Lakes, Song of the Paddle, Timeless Wilderness, The Voyageurs, and When the Wolves Sang.

Some of the general subjects include: aerials, aircraft, animals, beaver dams, bridges, buildings, boats, camera work, camping (misc., night, winter, etc.), canoeing (misc., solo, double, portaging, rapids, techniques, etc.), clouds, dams, filming, hockey, igloo building, kayaking, ocean, paintings (by Mason, sales, reference images, etc.), personal (family and friends), pollution, portraits, rapids, sugaring off, telemark, tent, trees, tracking, title slides, water skiing, winter, and wolves.

Some events include: Academy Awards, Winnipeg flood, Dog River show, Hood River Show, Mountains River Show.

Some of those photographed include: Joyce Mason and their children Rebecca (Becky) and Paul Mason, as well as Bruce Cockburn, Ken Buck, Blake James, the Madawaska Boys, and Dave Wright,

Various locations include: Banff; Beechy Island; Dumoine River; English River; Fort Saint Charles; Georgian Bay; Glacier National Park; Isle Royale; Jasper; Lake Superior; Magpie River; Magnetawan River; Magnissippi River; Manitoba (Churchill, Grand Beach, Manitoba Pioneer Camp, Whiteshell); Mars River; Meech Lake; Mountain River; Nahanni; French River, Petawawa River; Pukaskwa; Quetico; Vancouver and Victoria; Wawa; and White River.

The series also consists of a small selection of personal photographs from Bill Mason's childhood and youth in Manitoba. Images show a young Mason camping, fishing, canoeing, and the Manitoba Pioneer Camp.
