Photos taken at Chateauguay during the Mohawk Resistance at Oka (also known as the Siege of Kanehsatà:ke or the Oka Crisis), which began early in the morning on July 11th when the Sûreté du Québec conducted a raid on the Pines of Kanesatake. In response and in solidarity with the community of Kahnesetake, the Mohawks of Kahnawake seized the Mercier Bridge and established barricades of their own. Angered that their access to Highway 138 and Montreal was blocked, residents of Chateauguay gathered and burned hanging effigies of Mohawk warriors and politicians every night for a week after July 11th.
