Sean Riley worked for Allan J. MacEachen for approximately ten years, from 1974 to 1984. During his early years with MacEachen he worked as a Ministerial Advisor on policy and legislative affairs in the Department of External Affairs and in the Privy Council Office. In later years he worked as a Ministerial Advisor on federal-provincial fiscal negotiations for MacEachen when he became Minister of Finance and continued doing the same job when MacEachen became Secretary of State for External Affairs. This sub-series is made up of memoranda, reference material and working files that Sean Riley provided to MacEachen in support of his positions as Minister and President of Privy Council. This sub-series includes five sub-sub-series, President of the Privy Council III Working Files, Finance Working Files, Secretary of State for External Affairs Working Files, Sean Riley's Diary Files and Aggregated Files.

Arrangement note:

The material in this sub-series was identified as Sean Riley's working files when it was transferred to Library and Archives Canada. The material was separated into five sub-sub-series on the basis of content and date range, corresponding to the Ministerial Offices occupied by MacEachen, respectively President of the Privy Council and then Ministers of Finance and External Affairs. The records in each sub-sub-series was then organized alphabetically by subject title to facilitate access by researchers.
