The documents in this sub-series include memoranda that were directed to the Minister in his capacity as Secretary of State for External Affairs and as Deputy Prime Minister. Included in this sub-series are numbered memoranda, number 1989 to 3009, for 1982, numbers 1 to 1914 for 1983 and numbers 1 to 899 for 1984. There is a vast range of subjects covered in these memoranda, including Canada-US relations, Canada-France relations, East-West economic relations, protectionism in Canada, Canadian trade policy, nuclear negotiations with different countries including France, Korea, India and Pakistan; and nuclear negotiations with European countries. Other files if interest include topics such as the Canada's view of the US midterm elections in 1982, Cuba's President Castro's proposal for a meeting with Prime Minister Trudeau in 1982, diplomatic relations with the Vatican and the 1984 seal hunt and fish boycott in Canada.
