The files in this series represent the early years of Allan J. MacEachen's political career. The files, chronologically run from before and after his first elections of as a Member of Parliament in Nova Scotia in 1953 and 1957 and then continue on, following his defeat in the 1958 election, when MacEachen worked as an economic advisor to Lester Pearson in the Office of the Leader of the Official Opposition. The very significant date range for the series, 1948 to 1984, reflects the arbitrariness of the series' construction. While there is a certain homogeneity and integrity reflected in the bringing together of the early records, the addition of MP's records, records that did not specifically relate to his duties as a Minster, is less well defined and differentiated. Thus, many of the subject and miscellaneous files range in dates beyond his early political career and extend up to his retirement as a Member of Parliament in 1984. Topics include many constituency-related issues, general files relating to Parliament, caucus materials, biographical information and information on various county-level Liberal Party associations. The series consists of four separate groupings of files, early records (volumes 1143-1144), Office of the Leader of the Official Opposition (volumes 1145-1150), subject files (volumes 1151-1156) and miscellaneous files (volumes 1157-1160).
