Allan J. MacEachen served as Secretary of State for External Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister concurrently from September 1982 to June 1984. The position of Deputy Prime Minister was created by Pierre Elliott Trudeau in 1977 specifically for MacEachen to recognize his long years of service. MacEachen initially held this position from 1977 to 1979 and then from 1980 to 1984. This series includes two sub-series: Minister's Briefing Books and Memoranda for the Minister.
