The papers reflect Allan J. MacEachen's activities as Minister of Labour, from 1963 to 1965, as well as his own background, as the son of an Inverness, Nova Scotia coal miner, as a graduate of Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia and as a socially progressive member of the Liberal Party of Canada. The documents express his concern for working people, for meaningful employment, for workplace protections, for unions, for support for the unemployed and for the promotion of economic development which brings jobs to workers and their families. There are also occasional files, especially in sub-series 4, Transitional Files, which reveal MacEachen's activities as Minister of National Health and Welfare.

Arrangement note:

This series was structured by the archivist. Much of MacEachen's papers came to Library and Archives Canada in a disorganized manner. The Labour-tenure papers were intermixed with records from MacEachen's tenure of the National Health and Welfare and also the Manpower and Immigration portfolios. Sub-series 1, the coded files, manifested as a logical sub-unit of this series, defined as a unit in the Minister's office. Sub-series 5, Cabinet Documents, suggested themselves as a unit by their very nature. The remaining three sub-series were created by the archivist as units based on record type or their location in the original order of the records as they came to Library and Archives Canada.
