The sub-series consists of research notebooks, mostly created in the late 1950s and early 1960s. There are fourteen numbered notebooks, two others that are contemporary with them, and three notebooks from a slightly later date. The first notebook is from his sabbatical year in England, 1956-57, when he was working on his manuscript, Acceptance and Evil, or Acceptance and Rebellion. The notebooks sometimes focus on a few big subjects, such as Christianity, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, or Hegel, but also include notes from the journal Social Research or on books he is reading, whether Hans Jonas, Iris Murdoch, Mircea Eliade, G. L. Prestige, or others. When reading others, he prefaced his own ideas or interjections by his initials G.P.G. The notebooks frequently hold explanatory notes by Sheila Grant. Notebooks no. 6 and 8 are mostly empty.
