Department of National DefenceDescription:Joe John Sanipass participated in an oral history interview conducted by Dr. John MacFarlane for the Directorate of History and Heritage's History of Aboriginal Peoples in the Canadian Military project. The interview was conducted on 12/12/2001 via telephone between Ottawa and Big Cover, NB. The interview begins with Sanipass recalling childhood memories, the community where he grew up, family connections to the military, memories of the Second World War, and growing up on a reserve. He also shares specific memories about the post-WWII economy. He joined the military on March 13, 1957 and was released May 15, 1960. Sanipass comments on the trouble he had learning, what he calls, “the white man's way” during training. He briefly mentions his time peace keeping in Germany. The majority of the interview is dedicated to discussion of how the military influenced his life, the lessons he learned, and how he relates to other Aboriginal peoples he meets.Language:EnglishOriginal number:2001/29Notes:Detailed holdings information: -
