Department of National DefenceDescription:Ernest Nadjiwan participated in an oral history interview conducted by Dr. John MacFarlane for the Directorate of History and Heritage's History of Aboriginal Peoples in the Canadian Military project. The interview was conducted on 27/11/2001 via telephone between Ottawa and Wiarton, ON. The interview begins with Nadjiwan providing a description of the community where he grew up, his family's involvement in the military, and the history of military service in his community. He joined the Air Force in November 1951 as an aircraft mechanic. Nadjiwan describes his trades training at multiple camps and the types of engines he worked on. In 1957 he began traveling with the UN and specifically speaks about his time in Yemen. He is asked to discuss the type of planes that were in the Canadian Air Force in the 60s. He comments on unification, the growing number of women in the Air Force, how things changed over his 35 years of service, and how being Aboriginal affected his service.Language:EnglishOriginal number:2001/29Notes: -
