Joseph Meconse participated in an oral history interview conducted by Dr. John MacFarlane for the Directorate of History and Heritage's History of Aboriginal Peoples in the Canadian Military project. The interview was conducted on 20/08/2001 in Winnipeg, MB. The interview begins with Meconse recalling his childhood in Churchill, issues with the law, struggling because he could not speak English, and the living conditions of the Aboriginal communities in the area. His first experience with the military was with the bands which led to him joining the Canadian forces in January 1962. Meconse was deployed to Cyprus for UN duties in 1964. He describes how the Canadians were different from the other countries present, the cooperation between these countries, his daily duties, and how the UN was viewed by the population of Cyprus. The second side of the tape focuses on his time with the Canadian Guard back in Canada, his struggles with alcoholism, and how his experiences in the military helped him in Corrections.
