Len Desjarlais participated in an oral history interview for the Directorate of History and Heritage's History of Aboriginal Peoples in the Canadian Military project. The interview was conducted on 03/07/2001 in Esquimalt, BC. The interview begins with Desjarlais recalling his early years, schooling and work, the community he lived in with his family, and his enrollment in the army in 1952. In early September of the same year, Desjarlais was shipped out to Korea. He describes the voyage over, the relationships between the Canadians and Americans, and between the Native and non-Native, he also describes the vehicles and ammunition he used being in mortars. Desjarlais speaks about training, contact with the South Korean army, and describes the average day of firing mortars. The second side of the tape deals with his life after his discharge in August 1964. He continued to work in different areas of the military related to transport and arms. Desjarlais is asked to comment on the DVA's relation to Native veterans, the Millennium Medal, and tension between Native and non-Native workers in the military. Lastly, Desjarlais comments on his recent visit to Korea.
