Scrip was a certificate issued by the Department of the Interior which indicated the right of the holder to receive payment later in the form of money or land. The federal government distributed scrip to the Métis in exchange for their land rights, as a method of extinguishing their Aboriginal title to the land. The federal government also used scrip to distribute land to white settlers, including Original White Settlers, soldiers, and police who fought in the North West Resistance of 1885 (or North West Rebellion of 1885).

Researchers can use these indexes to find the claim number associated with each application, and then use this number to find the applicant's entry in the Alberta claims registers. The claims registers are now retained by Library and Archives as volumes 1491, 1492, and 1493 of RG15. Similar alphabetical indexes were compiled by McKenna and Walker and are now retained as volume 1490. All of these volumes are part of the sub-series "Registers and Indexes relating to Métis and Original White Settlers land records" (item ID number 156370).
