Photograph depicting two Anishinaabe (Ojibway) women under a tent. The young woman on the right is holding onto a tikinagan (cradleboard) containing a baby. A man is visible in the background. The photograph was taken in a Treaty 3 Anishinaabe (Ojibway) community in Northern Ontario, possibly near Lac Seul, during treaty annuity payments.

General note:

First Nations and Métis women traditionally used cradleboards and moss bags to protect and swaddle their infants. The bag is made of hide, fabric or cloth, and elaborately beaded by the women of a family. The bag is then filled with moss to keep the baby dry and act as a disposable diaper. The Cree/Ojibwe term for cradleboard is tikinagan (also spelled tiginaagan, tikkanaagan, or tikanagan).
