Reidford, James, 1911-2001 : James G. Reidford was the editorial cartoonist for the Montreal Star from 1942 to 1951, and for the Globe and Mail from 1951 until 1972. Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1911, Reidford's family moved to Toronto when he was a baby. He attended the Ontario School of Art and then worked in commercial in Toronto in the early 1930s. In 1938, he moved to Los Angeles where he studied at the Chouinard Institute. He then worked for the Walt Disney Studios as an animator for several years before returning to Canada to work as an editor cartoonist for the Montreal Star. In 1951, he began working for the Globe and Mail. He worked there until he retired in 1972. Reidford won National Newspaper Awards as Canada's best cartoonist three times (1950, 1956, and 1957). After his retirement he moved to an artists' colony in Mexico. James Reidford died in 2001.
