"55,000 for Breakfast" is a short educational film in the Canada Carries On series produced by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). It is about the 1949 meeting of the United Nations International Federation of Agriculture Producers in Guelph, Ontario, and their efforts to come up with a plan to solve world hunger by getting surplus food to people who need it. The film begins with the quote by former director general of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Norris Dodd from which it draws its name, where he claims that, “tomorrow morning, there will be 55,000 more people for breakfast in the world than there were this morning,” but food production has not kept up with these numbers, and for there to be true peace in the world the problem of hunger must be solved. The film continues with more quotes and narration, while showing footage of the meeting as the delegates from each country discuss this problem. Eventually a plan is proposed by the Canadian delegate that would establish an international agency and fund to help get food from the farmers who produce it to people who need it. Under this plan, a needy country would pay what it can for the food, and the farmers would still get paid market price for it, with the difference being made up half by the government of the producing country and half by this international fund. The entire conference endorses the plan, and a call to action is then made by the narrator, stating that it is now up to the governments of the world to take the plan and put it into practice. <11mn>
