Series documents collective bargaining, labour relations and related concerns between the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway, Transport and General Workers (CBRT&GW) and companies employing the union's members. The files record organizing, certification, contract negotiations, conciliations, strikes and lockouts, and working conditions. The files include expired collective agreements.

The majority of the files concern the rail industry; other industries include trucking, intercity bus travel, and marine transport. Employers documented in the files include Canadian National Railways (CNR), Via Rail, Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), the St. Lawrence Seaway, CN Route / Route Canada, Voyageur Bus, and various regional railways and bus lines.

The CBRT&GW negotiated some contracts as a partner of the Associated Non-Operating Railway Unions and negotiated other contracts while acting as the sole bargaining agent.

General note:

In the 1950s and early 1960s, collective agreements were negotiated between the Associated Non-Operating Railway Unions and multiple employers. The exact make up of the employers and unions changed over time. The employers included Canadian National Railways (CNR), Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo Railway, Ontario Northland, Algoma Central and Hudson Bay Railway, and Midland Railway Company of Manitoba.

The Associated unions included the CBRT&GW, Brotherhood of Railway Carmen (BRC), International Association of Machinists (IAM), Order of Railroad Telegraphers (ORT), Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees (BMWE), and Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP), and others.

Files from the 1960s often show the CBRT&GW negotiating as the sole union with employers.
