Canada. Business Development Bank of Canada. Indigenous Banking Unit : The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) established in 1996 the Winnipeg-based Indigenous Banking Unit (initially known as the Aboriginal Banking Unit) to foster relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities, organizations and financial institutions so to encourage Indigenous entrepreneurship and improve access to financing for Indigenous entrepreneurs.
While the actual financing and consulting services are still carried out within all BDC branches, the Indigenous Banking Unit in Winnipeg also spearheads special programs (e.g., the "E-Spirit" indigenous youth business plan competition and a summer internship program) and products (e.g., SOAR magazine as well as the Aboriginal Banking newsletter) aimed at promoting entrepreneurship amongst Indigenous peoples.
