There are six versions (at various stages) of the novel Volkswagen Blues., First version: 473-page manuscript with some deletions and substitutions as well as a few editorial instructions, originally stored in an envelope marked "Volkswagen Blues // 1 // manuscrit de la 1re version [manuscript of 1st version]"., Second version: typescript with some deletions and substitutions (and handwritten comments from a third party), in which handwritten sheets are inserted, all originally stored in an envelope marked "Volkswagen Blues // 2 // copie dactylographiée (avec corrections) de la version 1 [typewritten copy (with corrections) of version 1]"., Third version: manuscript with deletions and substitutions (separate pagination for each chapter), in which clean typewritten versions of certain chapters are interspersed, all originally stored in an envelope marked "Volkswagen Blues // 3 // manuscrit de la 2e version (les premières pages sont dactylographiées) [manuscript of 2nd version (the first few pages are typewritten)]"., Fourth version: 300-page typescript with a number of handwritten deletions, substitutions and insertions, originally stored in an envelope marked "Volkswagen Blues // 4 // copie dactylographiée de la 2e version, avec corrections [typed copy of 2nd version, with corrections]"., Fifth version: 300-page typescript (annotated photocopy) accompanied by a letter from translator Sheila Fishman, all originally stored in an envelope marked "Volkswagen Blues // 5 // copie dactylographiée de la 2e version, avec commentaires et suggestions de la traductrice Sheila Fishman [typed copy of 2nd version, with comments and suggestions from translator Sheila Fishman]"., Sixth version: 272-page typescript, originally stored in an envelope marked "Volkswagen Blues // 6 // manuscrit envoyé à l'éditeur [manuscript sent to publisher]".
