National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians : The National Association of Broadcast employees and Technicians (NABET) entered Canada in 1951 at the request of Charles Millard, Canadian director of the United Steelworkers (USW). The Steelworkers had signed a majority of technical employees at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and Millard felt that these workers would be better served by a broadcast union.

The predecessor to NABET, the Association of Technical Employees (ATE), was founded in the United States in 1933. The ATE changed its named to NABET in 1951.

In 1953, NABET was certified by the Canada Labour Relations Board (CLRB) and the first agreement was negotiated between the union and the CBC. NABET organised workers at private broadcasters (including CTV in 1961), video companies and educational broadcasters.

Following the 1974 convention, the Canadian locals received greater autonomy from the US-based parent. NABET was unusual in that the Canadian wing was such a large percentage of the international - at the time there were approximately 4,200 Canadian and 5,900 US members.

In 1992, Canadian NABET members rejected the merger of the US-parent union with Communications Workers of America (CWA). In 1994, the Canadian locals of NABET negotiated to merge into the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union (CEP). In 2013, the CEP merged with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) to form Unifor.
