This accession consists of records created and/or maintained by the Marine Safety Directorate at Transport Canada headquarters. The records in this accession primarily document the Directorate's activities in policy development, standards development, and regulatory oversight. They also document research studies and correspondence with international and domestic organizations that supported these policy development and regulatory activities. The records in this accession cover a wide range of subjects including: applications for temporary entry to foreign vessels for coasting trade; permits for vessels to enter the Antarctic per the Antarctic Environmental Protection Act (Madrid Protocol); research and development of ice class ships; construction standards and stability criteria for small vessels and passenger ships; pilotage regulations; approvals of courses offered by Canadian marine schools and training establishments; development of examinations and medical examination procedures for the certification of engineers and seafarers; and pollution prevention standards, particularly around the discharge of ballast water.
