Bentley, Winnifred K : Winnifred K. Bentley, long-time employee of the Government of Canada; listed in the City Directories as stenographer for the Geological Survey of Canada 1912-1920, Museum Assistant for the Mines Branch from 1921 to 1939, and artist for the National Museum from 1940 to 1942; appears in the City Directories from 1907 to 1964.
In the 1930s and early 1940s she was commissioned as a copy artist to paint portraits of distinguished Canadian naturalists for display in the halls of the National Museum. Including portraits of A.P. Coleman, Sir William Dawson, and Sir Daniel Wilson, among others.
Coleman, Arthur Philemon, 1852-1939 : Arthur Philemon Coleman, geologist, was born at Lachute, Canada East, 4 April 1854. He was the son of the Rev. Francis Coleman and Emmeline Adams, a descendant of John Quincy Adams. He was educated at Victoria University, Cobourg, Ont. (B.A., 1876; M.A., 1880) and at Breslau University, Germany (Ph.D., 1881). Coleman served as professor of geology at Victoria University, 1882-1901; and at the University of Toronto, 1901-1922. He was the Dean of Arts, Toronto, 1919-1922.
Coleman was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1900 and became its president in 1921. He was awarded the Society's Flavelle Medal in 1928. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1910 and won its Murchison Medal for distinguished research in geology. In 1915 he served as president of the Geological Society of America and was awarded the Penrose Medal in 1936. He received LL.D.s from Queen's University in 1913 and from the University of Western Ontario in 1922. He also received a D.Sc. from the University of Toronto in 1922. Coleman published three major works on geology between 1911 and 1926. He died, unmarried, in Toronto, 26 February 1939.
