Introduction by Bob Hayes, President of the Cape Breton Labour Council, to the assembled trade union representatives at the CCL educational institute. Introduction was preceded by the singing of the union song, "We're Gonna Roll the Union On". Speech of welcome by Donald MacDonald, maritime director of the Canadian Congress of Labour, about: labour, trade union movement, the Institute program of the CCL; Cape Breton Island. Speech of welcome by Tom Mclachlan, president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, about: education, uses and value of education; labour, the trade union movement, the educational program of the CCL; labour, labour legislation. Speech of welcome on behalf of the United Steelworkers of America (Canada) read by the presiding chairman of the meeting. ~Speech by Dr. Maurice M. Coady, Director of Extension at St. Francis Xavier University, at a CCL educational institute held in Sydney, Nova Scotia, about: leadership, qualities of leadership; society, ideal society; science, scientific knowledge, the economy, national income of the U.S. and Canada in 1933 and 1950, economic redistribution; democracy, economic democracy, development of political democracy; United States, history of the U.S., the American Revolution of 1776; capitalism, monopoly capitalism; Moses Coady, his seven point philosophy of economic democracy; social change, violent revolution, economy, modes of ownership, feudalistic private owners hip, free enterprise ownership, co-operative ownership; education, social awareness. Recording falters at three or four points for short intervals and is cut off just before end of speech. Recorded in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
