Fonds also includes legacy records of the predecessor unions of the CEP including the Energy and Chemical Workers Union (ECWU), Communications Workers of Canada (CWC), the Canadian Paperworkers Union (CPU), and the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians (NABET).

Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada : The CEP was created in 1992 following the merger of three major Canadian unions: the Energy and Chemical Workers Union (ECWU), the Communications Workers of Canada (CWC), and the Canadian Paperworkers Union (CPU). It was the first time that three Canadian unions had merged into one union. At the time of the merger, the CPU had 69,000 members, the CWC had 40,000 members, the ECWU had 35,000 members.

In 1994, three unions merged into the CEP: the Canadian membership of the International Typographical Union (ITU) merged into the CEP; the Southern Ontario Newspaper Guild (SONG), with 3,200 members, left the U.S.-based Newspaper Guild to join the CEP; and the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians (NABET), on a unanimous vote of its 8,000 members, joined the CEP.

In 1996, the CEP had a membership of 150,000 members.

In 2013, CEP merged with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) to form Unifor.
