This accession consists of records created and/or maintained by the Legal Branch and later the Secretary's Branch of the Department of Munitions and Supply, its post-war successor, the Department of Reconstruction and Supply, and later the Department of Defence Production. The records are arranged according to the Department's classification system. The accession includes records relating to the Second World War surveying and expropriation of lands across Canada undertaken by the Department for government agencies such as the Allied War Supplies Corporation (Munitions Plants and other industrial plants and projects producing materials for munitions), Wartime Housing Ltd. (War workers housing projects near war industries and later veteran's housing projects), and other entities. Project records can include general files, property title dockets, legal correspondence, and, for larger or complex projects, multi-part files covering negotiations and correspondence with landowners and other corporate entities and levels of government. A small number of expropriations carried out during the post-war era for other government agencies, such as the National Research Council, are also present. Many of the files originate from the office of Col. F.F. Clarke, Expropriation Officer for Munitions and Supply, whose work continued after the War. Records also document the subsequent disposal of lands, as well as legal cases arising out of claims against the Crown.
