The fonds pertains to George Laurence's work and activities in the field of nuclear physics, in particular in relation to the history of research in nuclear physics in Canada, the development of Canadian nuclear reactors, and the creation of the Chalk River nuclear plant. It also concerns his work and activities on nuclear energy and safety. Finally, it is focused on activities within the National Research Council and the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission and other organizations, such as Atomic Energy of Canada Limited , the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Canadian Association of Physicists.

The fonds contains many of George Laurence's texts and lectures. It also contains notebooks, spreadsheets and data, reports, texts by other scientists, and photographs.

Laurence, George Craig, 1905-1987 : George Laurence, a physicist specialized in the field of nuclear physics, was born in 1905 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He began his studies at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in 1925 and a master's degree in physics in 1927. In 1931, he earned his doctorate from the University of Cambridge under the guidance of Ernest Rutherford, the father of nuclear physics. In 1930, George Laurence joined the National Research Council and helped to found the radiation study laboratory, which mainly studies the effect of radiation on cancer treatment.

In 1939, he began studying the energy potential of nuclear fission. In 1942, he joined a team of British and American scientists at McGill University's Montreal Laboratory, where he nearly created the first nuclear chain reaction using an atomic battery. In 1945, the laboratory was transferred to Chalk River, where he helped to design the first nuclear reactor in Canada.

In 1946-1947, George Laurence was on the Canadian delegation at the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission. In the 1950s, he played a major role in the creation of the distinctive nuclear system in Canada. Between 1961 and 1970, he was President of the Atomic Energy Control Board, where he handled nuclear safety issues.

During his career, George Laurence received several awards and honours for his contribution to the field of nuclear physics. In 1956, he received a medal from the Canadian Association of Physicists for his accomplishments in physics and, in 1975, the W.B. Lewis Medal from the Canadian Nuclear Association. In 1988, he was honoured posthumously at the American Nuclear Society's annual meeting.

George Laurence died in Deep River, Ontario, in 1987. A street in the town was renamed in his honour.
