Clark, Joseph William Grieg : Joseph William Greig Clark was born at Toronto on 31 January 1896. His father, Joseph T. Clark, was the editor of the Toronto Star newspaper, and after high school, the younger Clark began working as a journalist.
Clark attested at Toronto in March 1916 in the 84th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force and embarked for England the following June. He then transferred to the 75th Battalion, with which he fought in Flanders. He joined the RFC in January 1917, serving in No. 13 Squadron as an aerial observer and gunner, before eventually becoming an instructor. Clark was mentioned in despatches five times and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross before being demobilised in 1919.
After the war, Clark worked in public relations and as a businessman in Toronto. He was Director of Public Relations for the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War, for which he was appointed Commander of the British Empire. He died in November 1956. His younger brother Gregory also served with distinction in the First World War and was one of Canada's most important news correspondents during the Second World War.
