The fonds consists of 179 letters written from Ralph Burton Morden (Regimental No. 541344) to his family during the First World War. There is also 1 black and white photograph, 1 metal 'Cyclists' pin, and a printed transcription of the letters. The material dates from 1916 to 1919.

Fonds also contains 15 letters to Ralph Morden from members of his family and a fellow serviceman.

Morden, Ralph Burton, 1894-1968 : Ralph Burton Morden was born in Belleville, Ontario on 9 September 1894. At the age of 21, while still a student, and with two years' experience as a private in the 15th Argyle Light Infantry (a militia group), he attested in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force. Morden was sent to England for training. Although he had initially signed on to be a member of the 4th Divisional Cyclists, he was sent to the 4th Divisional Signal Company where he served as a cableman and sappers (he also served with the 51st and 76th Batallions). In August 1916, he was sent to Belgium; in October 1916, he arrived in France. One month later, he was injured by shrapnel and was hospitalized in Dublin. He spent some time recuperating in England before being sent to the Canadian Engineers Training Depot in Crowborough, Sussex. In July 1917, he was transferred to a signal company stationed at Shoreham by Sea, Sussex. In October 1917, the company moved to Seaford, Sussex where he remained until the end of the war. He was briefly hospitalized in May 1918 with influenza. He was demobilized with the rank of Sapper in Kingston, Ontario on 18 January 1919. Ralph Morden died in Belleville, Ontario on 14 December 1968.
