The material documents William Tranter's childhood in Barston, England, his transition into the workforce, his family life in Liverpool, the voyage to Canada, his war service during the South African War, and his civilian life as a homesteader upon his return to Canada.

The donation also includes the book The Tranters: The Lives of William David Tranter and Amy Caroline Joyce, 1869-1957, complied and self-published by the Donor using the above-mentioned material.

The material includes approximately 388 pages of textual notes documenting his life story. Approximately 41 pages are notes written by Gladys Tranter (no relation), who was acting as Mr. Tranter's biographer and typist at the time of compilation. In addition, 3 pages of this is a typed transcription of poems originally written by Mr. Tranter. The material also includes 2 notebooks that have differing drafts of his chapter concerning his voyage from Liverpool to Canada, entitled "By Steerage to Canada", as well as various drafts and revisions to Mr. Tranter's other chapters.

Tranter, William David, 1869-1942 : British-born William David Tranter participated in three wars. He was born Barston in 1869 and apprenticed to the trade of Blacksmith and Wheelwright. In 1893 he enlisted with 4th Lancashire Field Artillery at the rank of Wheeler Corporal. In 1895 he served at the Relief of Chitral in India. In 1899 he immigrated to Canada where he worked at the CPR shops in Winnipeg as a wheelwright and coach builder; he joined the 90th Infantry Battalion as Sergeant of C. Company the same year. He served as Wheeler Corporal of the C. Battery FCFA in the Boer War in South Africa from 1899 to 1901. After the war he returned to Winnipeg where he rejoined the 13th Battalion CFH at the rank of Farrier Sergeant. Between 1902 and 1906 he worked for the residential school in Middlechurch, Manitoba. In 1906 he established Tranters' Woodworking and Repair Shop in Middlechurch, and in 1909 became a homesteader near Oak Point, Manitoba. Between 1901 and the outbreak of the First World War he continued to be involved with the 13th Field Battalion as a Farrier Sergeant. In 1914 he began working as Recruiting Officer in District No. 10 and in 1916 he went overseas as Transport Sergeant for the 222nd Battalion. In 1917 he served as Farrier Sergeant with CASC Seaford. In 1917 he was kicked by a horse and severely injured. He was returned to Canada and deemed unfit for further service. In 1918 he was discharged at Winnipeg. Unable to farm, he ended up dependent on charity until he died in 1942.
