This item consists of a watecolour rendering by Attilio Pusterla depicting intended frescoes in the parliamentary restaurant, House of Commons. It was likely created in the context of reconstruction following the 1916 Parliament fire.

Pusterla, Attilio, 1862-1941 : Attilio Pusterla was born in Milan, Italy in 1862. He attended the Brera Academy in 1880, and was exhibiting a painting in Milan and Rome by 1883; he subsequently showed works in Milan, Rome and Venice. In 1900, he moved to the United States where he proceeded to work as a fresco painter, notably on the Astoria Column in Oregon and in the Senate Banking & Commerce Committee Room; he also directed work on the frescoes for the New York County Supreme Courthouse on Foley Square. In 1920, Pusterla painted the only genuine frescoes in the Canadian Parliament, located in the Opposition Leader's office at the House of Commons; the works depict scenes of chivalry and knightly battles meant to represent the ideal attributes of a Leader of the Opposition: struggle, integrity, justice, fidelity, conciliation, watchfulness, fearlessness, vision and wisdom. Pusterla passed away in Woodcliff, New Jersey, in 1941.
