This irreverent etching of a beaver is far more than a vulgar joke. The classical allusions of the title situate it in a tradition of Western European fine art, while the cartoon like style immediately contradict these initial connotations. This Bacchant Beaver, with his glass of wine, is no savage, and as we can see by his flagrant urination, it is hard to mistake him for noble. Here, if the beaver stands in as a symbol of indigenous people, it is a symbol of a people who are at once culturally informed and sophisticated, and who are willing to challenge western senses of propriety.
