The sub-series consists of records relating to John Ralston Saul's talks for the 1995 CBC Massey Lectures series that were published as The Unconscious Civilization in 1995. It includes his drafts of the publicly-read lectures, radio broadcasts (recorded in studio), and finally the published book. The editorial process and revisions are shown in the drafts worked on by Don Bastian of Anansi Press and Donya Peroff. There are also corrections and revisions for later editions. Promotional material includes correspondence relating to the dustjacket blurb, publicity, advertisements, a poster, itineraries for public relations tours, and clippings of bestseller lists in Canada and Australia. The assembled reviews and articles show its reception in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, and the United States. The comments files reveal the response by readers, including letters from the artist Robert Bateman, writer Alberto Manguel, and editor William Toye, among others who expressed their appreciation. These letters also include comments on Voltaire's Bastards and The Doubter's Companion. Records relating to The Unconscious Civilization's winning of the Governor-General's Award for Non-Fiction and the Gordon Montador Award are found in the Speeches, Appearances, and Awards series.
