The sub-series consists of records of John Ralston Saul's second novel, "Baraka, or the Lives, Fortunes and Sacred Honor of Anthony Smith", published in 1983. It holds manuscript drafts, research material, correspondence, agreements, publicity and promotional material, and book reviews. The manuscript and typescript drafts depict the book's evolution, through its initial working title, "Unreasonable Acts" to other titles, "Acts of Unreason," "Deeds of Unreason", "Friends and Enemies" and finally "Baraka". In addition, there is a galley proof (French), and an advance reader copy. Most drafts show editorial notations by the author, but some drafts have annotations and corrections by others.

Saul did extensive research for Baraka, including travel with guerilla partisans in Africa. His memoir, "From Tindouf to the Sea: 1,500 Miles behind Moroccan Lines with the Polisario", documents his seven-day trip across Western Sahara. His research material also includes correspondence related to oil development in Vietnam; notes of interviews conducted with CIA agents, desk officers, and representatives of the Sub-Committee on Africa in Washington; research related to Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia; and writings by Maurice Strong. Saul's correspondence, contracts and agreements document the negotiations between his agents and publishers Granada and Collins. There are also letters from William French of the "Globe and Mail" and congratulations on Baraka's publication. Publicity and promotional material includes his Canadian book tour itinerary (with radio and television appearances), a flyer, book jackets, advertisements, and clippings. There are also book reviews from North American and international newspapers and magazines.
