The series comprises records of John Ralston Saul's professional, business, and related activities, including his professional employment in the 1970s, business initiatives such as FilmFive International, social activism, and involvement in organizations. Records of his work in the early 1970s as the Paris representative of Chapel Land, a property management firm, includes correspondence, agendas, notebooks, and property files. He became Special Assistant to Maurice Strong, Chairman of Petro-Canada, on the founding of the company in 1976, and became his Policy Advisor in 1978. Saul's personal files document Petro-Canada management, policy, and finances, and Strong's brief involvement in national politics in 1978-1979. Saul was also secretary of the Canada-China Trade Council, which was co-chaired by Maurice Strong and Paul Desmarais, and kept records of its work from 1978 to 1981.

The press files in this series hold correspondence, clippings, contact information, and other material relating to different newspapers and media outlets in different cities in North America and Europe. His writing projects and his work for Strong and Petro-Canada overlap in the late 1970s and early 1980s in these press files. His records as Chairman of FilmFive International document various efforts to bring his books and other projects to the screen. Correspondence reveals the interest of both producer Timothy Burrill and actor Jeremy Irons in doing a film of The Birds of Prey. The series also documents Saul's membership in a group of nine writers who organized a press conference in January 1997 to challenge reforms by the Ontario Government of Mike Harris, particularly the amalgamation of the City of Toronto and its impact on culture.
