Vestnik was the successor paper to the Kanadsky Gudok (Canadian Factory Whistle), a pro-Soviet newspaper founded in 1931 and circulated amongst the Russian Farmer Worker clubs in Canada. In 1940, the newspaper and the clubs were banned by the Canadian government for their links to the Communist party of Canada. When Russia became allied with the West in 1941, the Federation of Russian Canadians replaced the workers clubs and the Kanadsky Gudok was re-invented as the Vestnik. The newspaper was mainly printed in the Russian language. The paper included news stories from Canada, Russia and other countries; editorials; health, literary and youth sections; advertising and obituaries. Vestnik also functioned as a publishing house, and published a number of books.
